Major BART delays are impacting SFO, Millbrae and East Bay service Tuesday evening following a substation fire near Daly City station.
BART’s Red Line is fully shut down and will remain out of service until further notice, the agency said in a statement. BART service was briefly stopped between West Oakland and Daly City in both directions, but has since been partially restored.
The service disruptions came as firefighters responded to a fire at a power substation near the county line between San Francisco and Daly City at 6:56 p.m.
“Upon arrival, San Francisco Fire units confirmed an active trackside fire involving portions of a rail section and an adjacent building at the Daly City BART Station,” the San Francisco Fire Department said in a statement Tuesday night.
The fire has since been contained, with no injuries reported, and an investigation is underway, SFFD said.
BART says they are working to restore full power. As of 9:08 p.m., some limited service has already been restored on the San Francisco Line between West Oakland and Balboa Park stations.
BART service is also running between Colma, SFO and Millbrae stations, according to the agency. Muni is providing service between Balboa Park and Daly City Station, while SamTrans is providing service between Daly City and Colma stations.
A video posted to X around 7 p.m. appeared to show heavy smoke near a Daly City BART substation as riders passed through the area.
BART initially halted Red Line service around 4 p.m. after reporting a “trackside equipment” problem in Daly City at 2:48 p.m. It was not immediately clear whether the fire was connected to the equipment problem reported earlier Tuesday between Colma and Daly City.
BART also said trains from Berryessa and Dublin/Pleasanton were running only as far as 24th/Mission. Passengers traveling farther south were advised to exit at 24th/Mission and transfer to an SFO/Millbrae-bound train.
The service disruptions come amid a heat wave on the Peninsula. Daly City reached a high of 70 degrees Tuesday, with temperatures expected to climb to 83 degrees Wednesday.
A moderate heat advisory remains in effect for the Bay Area through 10 p.m. Thursday.
